Helping Hands Against Violence, founded in 1978, grew out of a local domestic violence tragedy. Originally operated by volunteers utilizing a "safe house" program, the agency is now staffed by 6 paid employees and owns and operates 2 facilities: an emergency domestic violence and sexual assault shelter; and a transitional housing program for young women ages 16-24 who have been victims of crime (sex abuse, sexual assault, physical abuse, domestic violence, parental neglect and/or abandonment) and would otherwise be homeless. Many clients come from other parts of the state or out of state, 95% are very low income, and 25% are Hispanic/Latino. Helping Hands also provides community education on domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and elder abuse. The agency's mission is to empower victims; raise public awareness about these types of crimes; maintain ongoing training for volunteers and staff; and keep a strong volunteer base.
